I enjoyed this book. However there is content in this book that is not for young readers. It is suitable for teens of dating age but not younger. I did after awhile find that I was bored with hearing about the everyday senses of Dani's tattoo. When she was having the extraordinary senses I was drawn in but felt the author over used sensations of the tattoo to help tell the story. That being said I still felt it was a very good book. There were a couple times I was disappointed to find that Meli and Dani were trying to get even with Josh. This could send this message to other girls to try the same stunt and it might not go as planned. Very Scary when you think about how a book could influence the life of another person to make bad decisions that could effect them for the rest of their lives.Product details

I am a 13 years old and i absolutely loved this book. every night when i get into bed and read i had a hard time putting it down because it was so intense. i recommend this book if you like suspenseful mystical stories. i am a very experienced reader and i read many varieties of books and this is one of my favorites. now get out there and read it.
Tattoo - The Awakening caught my attention immediately. As a therapist who works with adolescents, I was a slightly skeptical about what I was going to encounter in this book. Tattoo, a new novel by Toni Leland, is that most rare of books in which the dialogue and customs of today's teen-agers are faithfully rendered, and the emotions of our often angst-ridden young people are explored with real poignancy and sensitivity by the author. The story is about Dani Clark, a bright girl looking forward to learning much more in college than high school can teach her. But her life at almost-eighteen is riddled with problems. Her beloved father is in Baltimore; she, her mother and little brother are in Nebraska. She doesn't understand why her parents are separated. She misses her father and longs to live with him. She is of mixed parentage, her father black and her mother white. The Nebraska school seems crude and parochial to Dani after her previous school in Baltimore, where varied mixtures of color was common, and she fit in beautifully with everyone else. At first, Dani finds no friends at school. Every day is an ordeal with taunting students mocking her appearance. And to her dismay, Dani's relationship with her loyal mother goes downhill as her problems at school and at home increase. The novel describes Dani's brave attempts to find friends and preserve her dream of going to college in the fall. Her decisions are sometimes wrong, born out of self absorption, loneliness, and the overwhelming desire to fit in, but sometimes they're right, and with every success, we cheer for her. The book teaches as well as entertains, and for that reason, I would recommend Tattoo for both parents and young people.
Tattoo The Awakening is rightly named. It is not only a rite-of-passage piece, but also a tantalizing glimpse of things to come for 17-year-old Dani Clark. In this first foray by author Toni Leland into the YA genre, she navigates Dani out of her familiar comfort zone in urban Maryland and drops her into rural Nebraska, as a result of a parental split. Dani is conflicted by loving both parents but having to leave her dad behind; she's miserable over the loss of her home and friends; she's isolated by the hostile reception of students at her new school...and then makes a new acquaintance, her enigmatic neighbor, Meli. And the magicks begin. Her new neighbor is not just the-girl-down-the-road, the swamp behind her new home is not just a murky haven for moss and frogs...and her new tattoo is not just pretty ink. Nothing is as it initially seems to be, including Dani.
The author has definitely crafted Dani's world in three-dimensions - four, if one counts the magick - with grace, humor and authenticity. Tattoo has it all - suspense, mystery, fantasy, angst, growth, a tickle of romance, a very appealing ensemble and an enjoyably brisk pace. The reader's ride is up, down and sideways with a promise of much more to come.
Which brings me to the True Test Am I willing to let these people and this place go? Or do I want to spend more time with them? Oh yes, I do. Tattoo The Awakening could stand alone, but I, for one, am very grateful that a trilogy has been promised. I'll be waiting...
My niece who is twelve loved the book she read it in one sitting which says a lot. The book helps is on the underdog/ the one that doesn't fit in. It was really great watching the confidence grow on the character.
I enjoyed this book very much and would really enjoy reading the next book in the series, Toni Leland, hint, hint. The story line was easy to follow with and unusual twist. Love it!!!
Toni Leland has created a truly believable story when writing Tattoo The Awakening. This book has some of everything in it..suspense, mystery, fantasy, and just a hint of romance. Toni Leland gives the readers an up, down and sideways ride always with the promise of more to come. I am disappointed in how the book ended, since there is still much to tell and things left to discover. Tattoo The Awakening can be read as a stand alone, but have heard a trilogy is in the works. I know I will be anxiously be awaiting.
